Eco-evolutionary dynamics in metacommunities

A recap of the population genetics needed, worked examples of processes feeding back into one another, what eco-evolutionary dynamics are and — as importantly — what they are not, and what it takes to let a metacommunity evolve.

The tempo and mode of body size evolution in charontid whip spiders

With Paulo M. Martins, Gabriela A. Galvão, Thiago Gonçalves-Souza and Gustavo S. de Miranda. Amblypygi emerged over 330 million years ago and kept a remarkably conserved body plan — an evolutionary paradox next to the adaptive radiations other lineages show on reaching new niches. The talk disentangles the climatic from the habitat drivers of what body size variation there is.

The tempo and mode of tadpole body shape evolution

With Marcos Rafael Severgnini. Free-swimming tadpoles occupy habitats with very different hydrodynamics — permanent and temporary ponds, streams, phytotelmata, tree holes — and the larval morphospace shows repeated convergence. The talk asks at what rate, and under which model, that body-shape variation accumulated.
